VETERAN SUPPORTER, GLYNNE GWILLIAM, CELEBRATES 80th BIRTHDAY AND OVER 50 YEARS AS AN IPSWICH SUPPORTER
Glynne, as many of you know, has travelled with the Haverhill Branch to many Ipswich home games over the last few seasons. What you may not know is that, in spite of not being Suffolk born and bred, his support for 'The Blues' goes back much further - well over 50 years in fact. Having met a Suffolk girl during National Service, and marrying after completing his apprenticeship to become a journalist, Glynne successfully applied for a job as General News Reporter with the East Anglian Daily Times. He had really set his heart on being a sports reporter, but there were no vacancies at the time. However, Glynne often used to volunteer on Saturday afternoons to type up reports from district matches, and managed to take in some Ipswich games as well! The Ipswich theme tune at the time was 'Give it to Garneys' in tribute to the then centre forward (last heard of working at a garage near Portman Road!). He has seen two Ipswich managers - Sir Alf Ramsay and Sir Bobby Robson - go on to manage the England team.
A move to Lowestoft to work on the local weekly paper gave Glynne the opportunity to report on local games, however it was at Lowestoft Town, rather than Ipswich. Retirement brought more opportunity to travel to Portman Road for home games and to become a season ticket holder
Glynne developed the habit of supporting teams which played in blue and white strips from an early age. His auntie lived in Liverpool, and he would go to Everton matches with his father who was a keen supporter. Glynne's home town - Oswestry, also played in blue and white.
Although he is more of an armchair supporter these days, Glynne keeps abreast of team news through the East Anglian Daily Times, TV and many of his visitors.
On January 15th 2012, Glynne celebrated his 80th birthday with a tea party for around 50 family and friends. There were four generations of family in attendance, as well as family and friends representing each decade up to the 'big 8 0'. Unfortunately the weather was too cold for the Pimms and champagne to be served on the lawn, so it was served indoors with a traditional afternoon tea, birthday cake, balloons and banners, lots of lively chat (not all about football), and laughter. Glynne also received a bouquet in his favourite team colours!
As he begins his 81st year, Glynne's hopes that Ipswich sorts out its current problems quickly and approves of Paul Jewell's policy of bringing in some younger players to the squad. He also wishes the Haverhill Branch well for the future and carries fond memories of his visits.

Arsenal v Ipswich Town - The Emirates, Tuesday 25th January 2011
Report by Iain Ross, Haverhill Branch committee member:
Tuesday 25th January 2011 evening saw 44 members of the Haverhill Branch make the trip to the Emirates to see Ipswich play Arsenal in the second leg of the Carling Cup Semi-final. Ipswich having already won the home tie 1 - 0 were looking to go forward to the final but it was not to be - with Ipswich going down 3 - 0 at the Emirates. Having said that they were not disgraced and it took Arsenal over an hour before they at last managed to penetrate the defence and go onto the winning trail. The complete experience for the Ipswich Supporters was one to remember - with over 9000 making the journey to the game. The noise was coming from the Tractor boys and not the Gunners.
It did not take long for the rugby balls that appeared in the stands prior to the game to be confiscated. Perhaps this was the reason that from kick off Ipswich's "fly half" Grant Leadbitter attempted with the first kick of the game a cheeky attempt at a conversion, just clearing the cross bar!
On the way down to the game the younger ones spent their time on the coach having their hair and faces painted blue and white to get into the spirit of the night but sadly they spent so much time making themselves up it left us slightly older ones no time to make ourselves look pretty and join in the fun.
Luxury was the main words to describe the seats, facilities etc. at the ground.
The only down side was the walk after the game back to the coach.
It was good to see that at the end of the game Manager, players and staff came over to the stand we were in the acknowledge our support - they must have felt they were kicking into the North Stand in the second half with such a great turnout of Ipswich fans. This turnout even included names from the past sitting in the Upper Tie with the fans.
A great night out even with the result - let’s hope that we now start going from strength to strength under the guidance of our new manager.
Well done lads.
Here are some pictures taken during the evening.

By Iain Ross, Haverhill Branch committee member, November 2009;
Looking through one of my autograph books the other day, I came across a two page spread (left) which I knew were of Ipswich Town FC but that was as far as I knew. I started to look into the names shown and it was not long before I realised that what I had was in fact the first squad at trining after the second world war - the signatures must have been collected when I was 11 although I do not remember where. The name a A S Duncan stood out - it was in fact that of the Manager at the time - he had been Manager from 1937 and took Ipswich into the football league gaining succesive promotions from 3rd Division South to 2nd Division. He was in the end after a poor season, sacked in 1955 which left the door open for one of the famous names in Ipswich Management to take over - Alf Ramsey.
The rest is history.
